Description For two-semester anatomy & physiology lab courses. A streamlined, workbook-style approach to the A&P lab This full-color laboratory manual is designed for instructors who teach a two-semester anatomy & physiology lab course, but do not require the full range of laboratory exercises found in Marieb’s best-selling Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab Manuals (Cat, Fetal Pig, and Main).

Laboratory manual for anatomy and physiology answer key

This lab manual is written to complement Marieb’s Anatomy & Physiology, Sixth Edition, but can be used with any two-semester text. Instructors will find 27 concise, activity-based lab exercises that explore fundamental concepts in anatomy & physiology and build students’ observational and laboratory skills. Each lab is presented with learning objectives, cogent summaries of key concepts, and meaningful activities. For instructors who want their students to experience how to use a microscope, a complete exercise on its use and care can be found in Appendix A.

The fully revised Sixth Edition provides a more active, workbook-style approach that incorporates more visual summary tables, streamlines information, and engages students with hands-on drawing and review activities. Each lab includes a list of materials needed for conducting the lab, a complete list of learning objectives at the beginning of each exercise to help students track their progress, and up-to-date terminology in accordance with Terminologia Anatomica and Terminologia Histologica. The lab manual also features a full-color, extensive Histology Atlas, integrated Review Sheets with new full-color art, and new art and photos that help bring A&P to life. Workbook-style, student-friendly design condenses complex information into new visual summary tables and streamlines background information. This approach provides more space for students to write and draw in their lab manual. Selected full-color Review Sheet images clearly delineate key structures.

Thorough, clearly-written exercises help students comprehend and retain the material. Exercises include background information, objectives, step-by-step instructions, and integrated review sheets that can be used for pre-lab or post-lab review. Beautiful, full-color art and photos help students visualize anatomical structures and physiological concepts for laboratory practice. The art program uses rich, vibrant colors; 3D realistic rendering; and includes brand-new cadaver and histology photos.

An improved photo program offers a larger variety of images with new cadaver and histology photos that have been specially commissioned to meet students’ needs and also offer a wider variety of images for better understanding of anatomy. A full-color, 55-plate Histology Atlas has references to the photomicrographs found in appropriate figure legends throughout the lab manual. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D.

In zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts.

It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores.

This textbook, now in its 10th edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology. Marieb has given generously to colleges both near and far to provide opportunities for students to further their education.

She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College.

In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology® CD-ROM series. When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet.

Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis. Smith received her Ph.D. In Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. Before discovering her passion for teaching, she worked as a research scientist and project leader in the medical diagnostics industry.

In 1999, she joined the faculty at American River College in the Biology Department. Currently she teaches anatomy and physiology and microbiology to pre-nursing and mortuary science students at American River College. Starting in 2005, she began co-authoring Pearson’s PhysioEx: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology and has continued to co-author several versions of the software and lab manual. She is also co-authoring Pearson’s Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab Manual. Smith has been awarded “Instructor of the Year” by the American River College Associated Students for her commitment to serving students, and she is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).
